Group cover your team understands and uses.
Expat Insurance works with businesses of all sizes to design employee benefits that balance cost control, compliance and meaningful cover, while supporting recruitment, retention and wellbeing.

Why corporate and group insurance matters
Employers in Hong Kong face rising expectations to offer competitive benefits while managing higher medical costs and regulatory duties. Without a properly structured group scheme, a business can face unexpected claims, unhappy employees or trouble attracting and keeping talent.
Group insurance protects the business financially and gives employees confidence that they are supported if something goes wrong, whether through illness, accident, travel emergencies or loss of life.
What types of group insurance may you need?
Group medical insurance
The foundation of most employee benefit programmes: hospitalisation, outpatient treatment, maternity, wellness, dental and optical. Plans can be tiered for different staff levels and can include dependants.
Group accident and disability
Lump-sum payments to employees who suffer temporary or permanent disability from an accident. It protects staff from sudden financial strain and strengthens your benefits offer.
Corporate travel insurance
Protects staff travelling for work: emergency medical treatment, evacuation, repatriation and travel disruption. Annual plans can cover unlimited trips through the year.
Group term life insurance
A lump sum to an employee’s family if death occurs during the policy term, often used for mortgages, education costs and outstanding liabilities.
How claims work for your staff
Most group medical plans in Hong Kong run a direct settlement network. An employee presents a card at a doctor inside the network, the clinic bills the insurer and nothing is paid at the counter. Outside the network it reverts to reimbursement: the employee pays, submits the claim and is paid back what the policy covers.
The difference is cash flow for your people rather than cover, but it is the part staff judge the scheme on. A wide network and easy claims handling make a benefit feel generous. A thin one makes the same benefit feel like paperwork.
Where a claim is likely to be large, call us before the admission, not after it.
Where a group scheme stops
Two limits are worth telling staff about, because neither is obvious from the benefit summary.
- It ends with the job. A policy written for a company ends when the employment does. Cover is not portable, and an employee who leaves is uninsured from that day unless they have arranged something in their own name. Older staff, and anyone with a condition on record, find that far harder to replace.
- The benefit itself. Group benefit tiers are often set well below Hong Kong private hospital pricing. A top-up plan above the group cover, or a certified VHIS plan held personally, closes both gaps at once.
Neither limit is a criticism of group cover, which does the job it is designed for very well. They are the two places an employer gets asked a question by staff and has no answer ready.

What we do for your company
We are an independent broker, not an insurance company. The insurer you appoint pays for our services, so the advice costs you nothing and the premium is the same as going direct.
We start with an assessment of what you have and what your people actually use. We take the design to the market and come back with two or three genuine options and the trade-offs stated plainly. At renewal we do it again against the year’s claims, instead of simply accepting the invitation.
Between renewals we stay the point of contact: joiners and leavers, the information an insurer asks for at each anniversary, and any claim your staff need help pushing along. We are a licensed insurance broker regulated by the Insurance Authority.
Getting the information you need
Most companies come to us with one of three questions: what a scheme should cost, whether the cover they inherited is still competitive, or what to put in place now that headcount has grown. To start we need only rough headcount, the age spread of your staff and any benefit summary you already hold. We will tell you where the current arrangement is sound as readily as where it is not.

Frequently asked questions
Is group insurance compulsory in Hong Kong?
Employees’ compensation insurance is, for every employer and every employee from the first day of work, under the Employees’ Compensation Ordinance. Group medical, group life, accident and corporate travel are voluntary benefits.
How small can a company be and still get a group scheme?
Smaller than most owners assume. Insurers set their own minimum, and several will write a scheme for a handful of employees, though benefit design and pricing behave differently at that size.
What does a group scheme cost?
It depends on the age profile of your staff, the benefit tier, whether outpatient is included and how far the cover travels, so a single figure would mislead. Those levers move the premium more than switching insurer does, so we price the design, not the logo.
Does the cover follow an employee who leaves?
No. A company policy ends with the employment. A personal plan alongside the benefit, usually a top-up above the group cover, is the usual way to keep protection.
What happens at renewal?
The insurer reviews the year’s claims and issues terms. We take the renewal back to the market and compare it instead of accepting it. You get the information and the alternatives well before the renewal date, not on it.
What does using a broker cost the company?
Nothing. We are paid by the insurer you appoint, at the same premium you would pay approaching them directly, whether the scheme is five people or five hundred.
